The ICTCT Extra Workshop will be held in Vancouver, Canada on March 8-9, 2018, with the theme:

Improving the safety of vulnerable road users: Challenges and Opportunities.

Studies have shown that active modes of transportation such as walking and cycling have considerable social, health, and environment benefits. They can improve livability, increase activity levels, and reduce congestion and related emissions. As such, many cities worldwide are recognizing the important role that active transportation plays in creating green and livable communities and have implemented policies to encourage walking and cycling. However, active travelers are vulnerable to an elevated severe injury risk. Safety concern can also be a major deterrent to urban travelers choosing active modes. Besides that, also comfort and user friendliness – or usability – have to be on a high level in order to have a positive effect on mode choice. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors affecting the safety of these modes to develop effective safety programs for multimodal transportation. Furthermore we want to focus on studies that deal with measures to improve safety and the comfort of vulnerable road users and with evaluation of such measures.

This workshop focuses on methods to model, diagnose, evaluate, and improve the safety of active transportation users as well as how the user friendliness of the infrastructure for vulnerable road users can be enhanced. Topics included in the workshop cover the following areas:

• Diagnosing safety problems for pedestrians and cyclists
• Safety evaluation studies for vulnerable road users’ countermeasures
• Studies on how to enhance the comfort of vulnerable road users
• Use of surrogate safety measures to analyze the safety of vulnerable road users
• Methods for data collection of active transportation users
• Behaviour models for active transportation users

The XI ICTCT extra workshop offers a multidisciplinary forum for lively discussion among inter-national experts in an open-minded and friendly atmosphere. ICTCT invites interested persons to submit abstracts of 300 to 500 words before December 31, 2017 via EasyChair. The Scientific Committee of the workshop will review the abstracts for acceptance on the basis of the papers’ scientific value and interest, relevance to the workshop topic and likelihood to arouse discussion. The ICTCT secretariat will inform the authors about acceptance and send out a preliminary program at the end of January 2018.
